TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 3, 2019) – Tallahassee Community College's softball team dropped a pair of games to Pensacola State College on Wednesday, falling by the scores of 6-3 and 5-1.
The Eagles are now 3-13 in PC play, 16-29 overall.
In game one, Pensacola State pitcher Shayne O'Connell struck out 13 batters in the 6-3 win, although the Eagles had their opportunities against the Pirates' ace.
After spotting Pensacola State a 3-0 lead in its first at-bat, Tallahassee got on the board in the bottom of the first when Ismay Poot singled home Monica Marquez. The Eagles picked up two hits and drew two walks in the inning but left the bases loaded.
The score was 4-1 when Poot led off the fourth with a solo homer, and Tallahassee eventually loaded the bases with just one out. O'Connell, however, struck out Katelyn Hobbs and Marquez to preserve a two-run lead and start a string of eight straight strikeouts.
The Pirates added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
Poot was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Emma Fowler (2-12) pitched valiantly in defeat for Tallahassee, scattering nine hits in the complete-game effort. She didn't walk any batters and struck out five.
In game two, Pensacola State again jumped out to the early lead, scoring a pair of first-inning runs off Tallahassee starter Sidney Mathis (9-11).
Brugnoli homered off the scoreboard in the bottom half to cut the Pirates' lead in half, but that proved to be Tallahassee's only run of the game, although the Eagles again had scoring opportunities.
In both the fifth and sixth innings, Tallahassee had two on and no one out, but the Pirates' Savannah Foster emerged unscathed.
Brugnoli was 2-for-3.
Tallahassee is scheduled to host Gulf Coast State College for a single game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
